How Will Caleb Williams' Availability Affect the Eagles-Bears Odds?

One of the biggest stories from Week 2 was the injury suffered by Bears QB Caleb Williams…and the eventual memes that came when it was revealed that it wasn't so serious.

This has led to speculation as to whether he will be available against the Eagles on Monday night. Ben Johnson has described him as week-to-week, but has yet to rule him out for Monday night, with the star QB being listed as Doubtful.

Of course, Williams probably won't be at 100%, but whether he plays or not will still affect the betting markets. In fact, the market has already reacted.

Prior to the injury, the Bears were 1.5-point home favorites against the Birds. Since then, the market has moved all the way to -4.5 in the Eagles' direction across the board at all NJ betting sites.

It had originally only moved to -3.5, but with reports that Tyson Bagent is in concussion protocol and veteran Case Keenum will likely start, odds inched a bit further in Philly's direction.

So, the Bears could be choosing between their hobbled star or the corpse of Case Keenum. The Eagles' pass rush complicates the decision even more.

A less-mobile Williams would not just lose opportunities to scramble. He could also struggle to escape pressure and buy time when his protection breaks down, making the Eagles a tough matchup with a pressure rate of over 40% through two games.

The Eagles do not need to dominate every snap to cause problems. Interior pressure could force Williams out of the pocket, while an edge rusher beating his tackle could demand a sudden burst of acceleration.

Johnson could lean on the running game and quick throws to reduce that exposure. But he can't guarantee every third down is manageable, or every protection holds up.

Chicago has little reason to send Williams out as a sitting duck in the backfield. Being able to throw from a clean pocket only answers part of the question. The Bears also need confidence that he can move a bit.

That makes it difficult to see Chicago rushing him back unless his mobility is genuinely there. Philadelphia's pass rush is an argument for caution, not proof that Williams will sit, but this is hardly an ideal matchup for risking a young star QB's health.

What Happens to the Odds Next?

Simply naming Williams the starter could bring the spread back toward Chicago, but the Eagles will likely still walk into Soldier Field as the odds-on favorite. A limited Williams might improve the Bears' chances compared to Bagent or Keenum, but he won't be at full strength.

It's being treated as highly unlikely that he will play, so Chicago ruling him out wouldn't shift the odds towards Philadelphia very much either.
