NFS Recap: Frank Reich Doesn't Want Eagles OC Job, Belichick Denied First-Ballot HOF, and the OC Search Hits Day 15
Dan Sileo breaks down the biggest story of the NFL offseason: Frank Reich won't take the Eagles OC job because it's not a play-calling position, Bill Belichick was denied first-ballot Hall of Fame status, and the OC search enters Day 15 with no end in sight.
NFS Recap: Frank Reich Doesn't Want Eagles OC Job, Belichick Denied First-Ballot HOF, and the OC Search Hits Day 15
Frank Reich Says No to Philadelphia
In what Dan Sileo called one of the most revealing developments of the entire OC search, Frank Reich — Nick Sirianni's best friend and the coach who won the Eagles their first Super Bowl — reportedly does not want the offensive coordinator position in Philadelphia.
"Frank Reich didn't want the job. His best friend doesn't want the job," As discussed on the show, on Tuesday's National Football Show. "This should tell you all you need to know. It's not an offensive coordinator's job. That's why everybody's turned you down."
Sileo, who has known Reich since they were both 17 at the University of Maryland, explained that Reich wants to be a play-caller, and the Eagles OC position doesn't offer that autonomy. Instead, Nick Sirianni controls the construction of the game plan.
Belichick Denied First-Ballot Hall of Fame
In the other major story of the day, Bill Belichick was denied first-ballot Hall of Fame status after 11 of 50 voters chose not to vote him in. The eight-time Super Bowl champion needed 40 votes (80%) and fell short.
"If Bill Belichick is not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, anything that Nick Sirianni ever does in his entire career will never, ever shape up to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer," Sileo declared. He called the decision "petty" and "an indictment on the voters, not on Belichick."
Sileo pointed to Belichick's 334 victories, 31 postseason wins, and his role in coaching two of the greatest players in NFL history — Lawrence Taylor and Tom Brady — as more than sufficient credentials.
OC Search: Day 15 and Counting
The Eagles OC search entered its 15th day with no resolution in sight. Brian Dable chose the Titans, Mike McDaniel went to the Chargers, Kevin Stefanski took the Falcons head coaching job, and now Frank Reich prefers the Jets.
"If you're going to settle on somebody, why don't you just keep Kevin Patullo?" Sileo asked. "If you're going to interview and hire a bunch of nobodies, what's the point?"
