Eagles Elevate Joe Casper to Secondary Coach After Christian Parker's Departure
The Philadelphia Eagles have officially elevated Joe Casper from safeties coach to secondary coach, filling the vacancy created by Christian Parker's departure to the Dallas Cowboys. The move was revealed on Tuesday's Birds 365, where John McMullen called it a "no-brainer" that was well-known behind the scenes.
Fangio's Fingerprints All Over This
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was the driving force behind the promotion. The two have a long working history — Fangio previously took Casper from the Eagles to Miami, then brought him back to Philadelphia. "Big Fangio is a big fan," McMullen said, describing the succession as seamless.
Casper is universally well-regarded within the Eagles building. Cooper DeJean immediately took to social media to endorse the move, a sign of how highly the players think of their new secondary coach. McMullen noted there was "no reason to go outside the building for that job."
Why the Eagles Moved Quickly
The Eagles don't typically act quickly on coaching moves, but this was an exception. Casper had multiple offers on the table, including a potential reunion with Jonathan Gannon in Green Bay. The Eagles had to secure him before he walked, and they did.
More Staff Turnover Possible
McMullen cautioned that more coaching turnover may be coming. There's a possibility that Klint Kubiak leaves, and other support staff members have drawn interest — Renell Williams interviewed with the Cowboys. If Kubiak departs, McMullen flagged that as a bigger concern because unlike the Parker-to-Casper pipeline, there's no obvious heir apparent for Kubiak's role.
McMullen used his "Xerox machine" analogy: each copy is a little less sharp than the original. Parker did a very good job, and while Casper is well-positioned to succeed, there will likely be some early growing pains. Still, this is the nature of the NFL — the Eagles are the reigning Super Bowl champions, and staff departures are inevitable when coaches perform well.
The Eagles still need to hire a safeties coach to backfill Casper's former role, and Fangio reportedly has names in mind.
